Best Start tax credit (from Work and Income)

Best Start tax credit is a weekly payment. You might be able to get a payment for each child in your care, until they turn 1. Then, payments continue from age 1 until they turn 3, if your family’s income is below the maximum amount allowed. If you’re expecting to care for a child for less than 12 months, you will need to check your eligibility for Best Start tax credit with Inland Revenue. We’ll talk to you about this.

  • We don't think you can get this because:

    • You are not eligible to receive a main benefit from Work and Income

    • None of your children are eligible

  • However you do meet these requirements:

    • You are a New Zealand Citizen or Resident

  • How to apply for Best Start tax credit (from Work and Income)

You don't need to do anything to get this payment - if you qualify, it will be paid to you automatically. If you are not receiving a Young Parent Payment, you can choose to get paid by Work and Income or Inland Revenue.

If you can apply online for more than one service, you only need to fill out the form once.
